Managing Clean Water And Waste
It is essential for us humans to have access to clean drinking water. In today’s world, water has become a commodity which has to be protected. South Africa’s Cape Town ran out of clean drinking water a few years ago and many other cities are heading in the same direction. Before we start analysing India’s waste management system, we need to go over the importance of clean drinking water.
5: Nourishment
Human beings cannot survive without clean drinking water. It is a basic right of every human being. Without clean water, a civilization cannot be expected to survive. That is the sole reason why civilizations in ancient times were situated near water sources such as rivers. Water nourishes human beings and we cannot take this commodity for granted.
4: Prevents diseases
If people have access to clean drinking water, ‘clean’ being the keyword, many diseases like cholera can be prevented. It is due to unclean drinking water that many people contract diseases which could have been easily avoided.
3: Flushing out toxins
Clean drinking water flushes out toxins in our bodies. Thus, Water and sanitation becomes even more important in hot and humid countries like India where there are more chances of people having toxins inside their body. Clean water helps you maintain good health and that is another reason why it should be accessible to everyone.
2: Agriculture
Water is essential for agriculture and for producing foods. All crops require water to grow and India is an agricultural country where many of its citizens are farmers. Thus, water and sanitation programs are even more crucial for the people of India.
1: Improves Sanitation
Water is very important for sanitation. Whenever we clean something, we use water and thus, a clean place must have access to clean water.
Water and Sanitation programs thus become very important in countries like India. Another aspect which is quite overlooked is waste management systems. In many cities, the waste generated by its population is dumped into the nearest water source and that restricts the access of people to clean drinking water. This polluting of water bodies also create health epidemics and kill a lot of people. Thus, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and its initiatives such as new waste management systems are very important for the survival of our nation’s water bodies. Recently, it was reported that Bangalore’s lakes had toxic foam forming on their surface. This degenerated conditions of our water bodies will hinder the success of our nation. Thus, it is the goal of India Sanitation Coalition as well as other bodies associated with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to have clean water bodies in the nation.
In towns, the government has introduced garbage trucks which collect the garbage from houses in a locality. This service prevents people from throwing their garbage in the open or into local water bodies. This step has proved highly beneficial for the environment and has actually helped in the cleaning up of many cities and towns.
