Do you know India is processing about 70% of the daily waste? The next step is to take it to a complete 100%. That’s the goal our Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced for Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.

According to the Press Information Bureau, India generates 62 million tonnes of waste which contains both recyclable and non-recyclable waste. The generated waste can be divided into three major categories: Organic (biodegradable waste), dry (recyclable waste), and biomedical (sanitary and hazardous waste).

The solid and liquid waste management (SLWM) component of ODF Plus is monitored on the basis of four key areas: plastic waste management, biodegradable solid waste management (including animal waste management), greywater management, and fecal sludge management.

The major goal of Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 envisions making cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ensuring grey and black water management. This mission focuses on source segregation of solid waste, utilizing the principles of 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management.

Our government is doing their bit to make sure that our country becomes
cleaner and more hygienic. As responsible citizens, you and I need to do our
duties to make sure that we do our bit to help with this noble mission. The cleanliness of our surroundings is our responsibility, not only when it comes to our houses but also when it comes to public places like parks, tourist attractions, and public toilets. After the awareness was spread by our government through social media, advertisements etc, I have noticed that there are more and more people coming forward in cleanliness drives and helping in the achievement of a cleaner India. These cleanliness drives are being organized by NGOs and various public and private organisations on beaches, tourist attractions and other places. And these cleanliness measures in public places not only improve the standard of living but also give a very positive image about our own country- India to the tourists that visit us from other countries.

Citizen participation and engagement are the key to the waste management sector and induce the necessary behavioral change. Building an appropriate institutional framework along with policy-level directions will help facilitate the necessary change.

So to sum it up, missions like Swachha Bharat Abhiyan play a vital role in
the betterment of our country for a brighter and cleaner tomorrow!
