Cleanliness is next to Godliness. You all must be aware of this phrase. But how many of you have actually followed this? Even if some people must have followed it, did they actually try to follow the practice outside their homes? People are very narrow-minded when it comes to cleanliness. Especially when it comes to cleaning their own surroundings or you can say anywhere outside their homes.

We must not just restrain ourselves from keeping our home clean, but also keep our workplace, our vehicles, and most importantly our surroundings clean. A person should make cleanliness their habit so that wherever they go they carry cleanliness with themselves. For example, a person who is not clean will not pick the trash they see outside their home and throw it in a dustbin. But a person who has cleanliness in their behavior or has the habit of cleaning every day would pick the garbage and drop it at the right place. It must come from within. It is everybody’s responsibility and one should keep themselves and their surroundings clean and hygienic. It also brings good and positive thoughts in the mind which slows down the occurrence of diseases.

Everyone keeps their home clean. Now, let’s talk about why we should keep our surroundings, our society and our country clean.

It is important for all living beings: Environment is a place where humans, as well as plants and animals, inhabit. Many stray animals, beggars, and plants die because of the diseases caused by germ-infested food or other rotten litters being thrown in the open air. To keep it neat and clean is our responsibility. We need to know where we need to dispose of our litters.

Prevent ourselves from diseases: Do not keep static water accumulated for a long time as the mosquitoes born from such water can cause serious diseases like Dengue, typhoid, hepatitis, etc. Always keep disposing and refilling the water. Do not consider “flies” to be harmless because they do not suck blood. They spread more chronic diseases like cholera, conjunctivitis, dysentery, gastroenteritis, salmonellosis, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, etc.

Getting the best out of nature: Clean environment cuts down on pollution level, it nourishes us with fresh air. Delhi is one example of bad air quality. The irony is everyone wants to remain healthy, but there are only a handful of people who want to keep their environment clean. Water pollution and litter are considered to be two of the main causes of the environment being dirty.

Among the handful of organizations, one such organization is the India sanitation coalition who has taken the initiative of Swachh Bharat Urban mission in the urban places. It has taken the initiative of cleaning 4000 plus towns which aims to clean the streets, roads, and infrastructure of the country.
